As we all know, the UFC is looking to increase their brand recognition worldwide; naturally, the single most asked question addressed to UFC president Dana White is: “When are you coming to my hometown?” Naturally, White typically responds with: “We’re going everywhere.” While those are standard, it illustrates the popularity of the UFC both here in the States and worldwide. Since we’re on the subject, White has mentioned the very possibility of Abu Dhabi hosting a UFC event in the future.
White got into more specifics during Saturday’s post-fight press conference at UFC 105; Dana’s take about Abu Dhabi?
“We’re sending some of our crew there tomorrow. They’re flying out of here in the morning, and it looks like we’re going to do a fight in Abu Dhabi. That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to figure out how this thing we’ll work. I don’t have a deal, but I’m pretty confident that we’re going to make one.”
Some info about Abu Dhabi: Located in the United Arab Emirates, it was rated ”The Richest City in the World, according to Fortune Magazine in 2007; it is also known throughout the MMA community as the birthplace of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship.
This locale would make perfect sense for the UFC as it would introduce the organization to the Middle East; just the fact that MMA is already big in Abu Dhabi along with there is already a venue in place makes this a natural for future UFC events. I like the idea of an event taking place there in the near future. This is a slam dunk, Dana; just make it so.
