UFC Event In The Works For July?

Mark July 19 on your calendar if you’re a MMA junkie, because that day  – as crowded as it already is – may just get even more crowded as according to Sherdog.com and verified by several MMA sources, the UFC is in the planning stages of an event (no doubt in response to the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view event) that assuming it comes to pass, will be televised on Spike TV.  Zuffa, Inc., parent comp[any of the UFC, is looking to hold the event in Las Vegas; such heavyweights (pun not intended) such as Wanderlei Silva and Brandon Vera have been approached about participating in the event (in probably a light heavyweight championship main event), although as in a lot of cases, a combination of the aforementioned two along with other fighters is also being considered, as well.

Vera has made it no secret that he would want to fight in the 205-pound division; he is looking to rebound from his controversial first-round loss to Fabricio Verdum at UFC 85 on June 7 in London.  On the other hand, former Pride champion Silva, after a tough loss to Chuck Liddell, he rebounded with a 36-second win over Keith Jardine at UFC 84 last April in Las Vegas; the victory snapped a 3-fight losing streak, which included losses to Dan Henderson and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.  I don’t want to say that UFC is scheduling this event as an act of desperation, but it seems to signal that they have some competition in the mixed martial arts industry – and healthy competition is always a good thing, even in MMA.
