UFC 90 In October?

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Although it is in the planning stages, it appears that UFC 90 may take place on or around October 25, according to MMAjunkie.com.  During this weekend’s UFC 86 event, UFC president Dana White mentioned the possibility of the upcoming show and a few MMA fighters’ managers and agents have said that the organization has placed some calls recruiting fighters for the event.  A lot of things will have to align for this event to happen on the proposed date.  Theoretically, UFC 90 would probably take place a week after UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben – more than likely on pay-per-view and the likely locale being Chicago.

The UFC had intended for UFC 89 to be broadcast on Spike TV as an avenue to promote their next event (UFC 90), but no deal has been struck with the cable network as of yet.  The bigwigs at Spike TV haven’t commented on the possibility of airing UFC 89, but with the card being below-average (by UFC standards), the network wouldn’t just hand out the big bucks for the rights to televise UFC 89.  But assuming that UFC 90 does indeed take place in Chicago, it would be the first UFC event to take place in the state of Illinois since the state passed legislation that called for the Illinois State Athletic Commission to regulate mixed martial arts events.

During a press conference that took place this weekend, White announced that UFC was fairly close to doing a show in Chicago in late October; such a move would make perfect business sense as Chicago is an untapped MMA market ripe for the picking.  Only a couple venues could host a UFC event – the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL and the United Center in Chicago; the Allstate Arena holds around 20,000 so they can be considered the early favorite to host a UFC show in October.
