UFC 87 – By The Numbers

While there is a fight to be had in Minneapolis, MN later today in UFC 87, there is a bit of a numbers geek in all of us – especially when it comes to sporting events.  And UFC 87 is no different in that respect.  Haivng said that, here are some interesting numbers and facts that directly or indirectly involve UFC 87, courtesy of Sherdog:

Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch

  • .897 — The combined winning percentage of St. Pierre and Fitch, highest of all main event pairs in 2008.
  •      2 — Losses for each main event fighter, the lowest for any main event fighter this year with at least five appearances.
  •    15 — Consecutive wins for Fitch, the longest streak for any fighter on the card.
  •  161 — Days between fights for Fitch.
  •      0 — Shared opponents between St. Pierre and Fitch.
  •      1 — Welterweight title fight this year (Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra).
  •      2 — Welterweight champions this year (St. Pierre, Serra).

Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring

  •     3 — Years since Brock Lesnar held a professional wrestling championship belt.
  •    39 — More fights that Heath Herring has had than Lesnar.
  • .955 — Collegiate wrestling winning percentage of Lesnar.

Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta

  • .667 — Percentage of fights Florian ends by submission.
  • .520 — Percentage of fights Huerta ends by KO or TKO.
  •      2 — Times that Florian has gone the distance — both losses.
  •      6 — Times that Huerta has gone the distance — four wins, one draw and one no contest.

The Event

  • 0 — UFC events previously held in Minnesota.
  • 1 — Fighters on the card who hold or have held UFC gold (St. Pierre).
  • 2 — Fighters on the card fighting out of Minnesota (Huerta, Lesnar).
  • 3 — Fighters who will enter the event undefeated in their MMA career (Demian Maia, Andre Gusmao, Jon Jones).
  • 6 — Countries represented by the fighters at UFC 87 (United States, Brazil, Canada, France, Norway, Armenia).
  • 19,500 — Capacity of the Target Center.

Other Notes:

  • Either Andre Gusmao or Jon Jones will lose their first loss in the UFC tonight.
  • Tomasz Drwal was originally slated to face Gusmao, but had to withdraw due to an undisclosed injury.
  • The Jason McDonaldDemian Maia bout will be the first meeting between two fighters who have eaxh won “Submission of the Night” honors twice.  Not to mention that they both performed this feat in consecutive bouts.
  • Although Ben Saunders lost during Season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter, he has never lost a MMA fight.
  • Prior to entering the UFC, Manny Gamburyan‘s only MMA loss was to Sean Sherk.
  • Gamburyan’s opponent at UFC 87, Rob Emerson, was part of the double-knockout that took place at The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale.
  • Cheick Kongo‘s last 4 fights have gone to a decision while only 1 of Dan Evensen‘s last 4 fights went to a decision.

  1. all of these fights were really good. the best ones though were gsp vs fitch and lesnar vs herring.
