UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin – Notes And Quotes

UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin

Some quotes from some of the fighters (and Dana White, of course) who clashed in UFC 86:

  • “There are a million different scenarios we can do. It also depends on his (Rampage’s) leg.” – Dana White on the next light heavyweight title fight
  • “It was alright.  It’s one of those things where you think I should’ve done this and I should’ve done that…There was a lot of things I planned on doing.  I think there’s a lot of things I can fix.” – Forrest Griffin following his win over Rampage Jackson
  • “I didn’t think Forrest could handle me.” – Jackson following his loss to Griffin
  • “I’m not the feared guy.  But I’m going to fight for 25 minutes.  You look at the other champions. Anderson Silva?  Terrifying.  BJ Penn? Terrifying.  I’m just going out and fighting for 25 minutes.” – Forrest Griffin
  • “I feel like I won the fight…I dropped him a couple of times.  When I had him on the ground I was doing good.  When he was on top he was missing a lot.” – Jackson on the judges’ decision
  • “I tried to knock him the hell out.  He just wouldn’t go.” – Quinton Jackson
  • “Rampage wants a rematch.  Forrest said he’d give him a rematch.  A rematch would probably be good for everyone involved.  But there’s a lot of different things involved.” – Dana White
  • “This is the fight game, not ping pong.” – Dana White on the bloody Josh Koscheck-Chris Lytle fight
  • “I think my hair was red.  I was in the shower later and it was dripping red.  It shows how tough Chris Lytle is to have those cuts on the head and keep fighting.” – Josh Koscheck on the bloody fight
  • “I think I gained a lot of respect after my previous fight.  I’m trying to improve for the fans and eventually become a well-rounded fighter.  The boos are going to happen.  I don’t want to be the in between guy because nobody remembers that guy…so I can play the bad guy.” – Koscheck on not being a fan favorite
  • “The game plan was to have good footwork and sprawl.  I was going to take my time and not make any mistakes.  If I made a mistake I was dead.” – Patrick Cote on his win over Ricardo Almeida

With the victory, Cote will get that title shot he has clamoring for.  More than likely his opponent would be Anderson Silva.  Griffin was late arriving at the post-fight press conference, due to the stitches he received from medical personnel.  White stated that the UFC is trying to secure events in Chicago in October and Boston in November.  Attendance for UFC 86 was 11,172, with a $3.2 million gate.  White awarded the fight award bonuses; Fight of the Night went to the Jackson-Griffin bout, Submission of the Night went to Cole Miller and Knockout of the Night went to Melvin Guillard (it was the only knockout – duh).
