Thomson To Defend Strikeforce Title Against Edwards

On Monday, Strikeforce announced that Josh Thomson will defend his Strikeforce lightweight title against Yves Edwards at the promotion’s next event, which will take place on November 21 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA; the bout will be a rematch that stemmed from UFC 49 back in 2004, in which Edwards KO’d Thomson in a first-round victory.

Thomson (16-2) won his current title from Gilbert Melendez in a unanimous decision during a Strikeforce event in June and last competed in September during Strikeforce’s event at the Playboy Mansion, defeating Ashe Bowman.  Edwards’ (34-14-1) last bout took place in June during EliteXC’s “Return of the King” event in Honolulu, HI, losing to K.J. Noons.  With the addition of this bout, the Strikeforce event, which will be televised on HDNet on November 21, looks like this:

  • Yves Edwards vs. Josh Thomson
  • Renato Sobral vs. Bobby Southworth
  • Joe Riggs vs. Luke Stewart
