UFC 103 Bonuses Awarded, Story Cleans Up

Rick Story

While it is customary for the UFC to hand out post-fight bonuses, it is rare when one fighter gets paid twice for his time in the Octagon. The fighter in question is little-known Rick Story. Story, in addition to winning his fight aganst Brian Foster, picked up two post-fight bonuses: Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night. For his efforts, Story earned $130,000.

Below are the post-fight bonuses for UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort:

Submission of the Night: Rick Story ($65,000)

Knockout of the Night: Vitor Belfort ($65,000)

Fight of the Night: Rick Story, Brian Foster ($65,000 each)

Fight Card Preview: UFC 103

Jason sent this in:

On Saturday, September 19th, mixed martial arts fans in Dallas, Texas will be treated to what could be the best fight card of the year, when UFC 103 heads to the American Airlines Arena. The card is stacked with recognizable fighters, and will be headlined by a 195 pound catch-weight super fight pitting superstar Rich “Ace” Franklin against former UFC champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort. Even with no title on the line, UFC 103 should be one of the best fight cards of the year.

Now for the fighters:

Belfort will be making his long-awaited return to the Octagon following his recent successful stint with Affliction, which saw him annihilate both Matt Lindland and Terry Martin with powerful strikes. (From 1997-2005, “The Phenom” bounced back and forth between Pride and the UFC, finding success in both organizations.) Primarily known for his boxing technique and ferocious style, he’ll enter this fight having won his last four bouts.

His fighting career was only recently considered by many in the MMA community to be nearing its end, but if his recent showings are any indication though, he may be making one final push towards a UFC middleweight title. Now Rich Franklin was in a similar position not too long ago, when after losing a second fight against Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title, he was forced to move up in weight or forever be relegated to division gatekeeper.

Since his move to the 205-pound division, “Ace” has looked like a revitalized fighter. He defeated Matt Hamill and Wanderlei Silva, while only losing a controversial decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 93. With a 25-4 professional record, Franklin has shown that he belongs among the UFC elite at any weight. A win against Belfort will put him in title contention for the UFC light heavyweight belt. Since both fighters love to stand in the pocket and strike, this fight could ultimately end up being a nominee for fight of the year.

Also on the card will be a heavyweight match between two of MMA’s most dynamic fighters when Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic tangles with Brazilian kick-boxer Junior “Cigano” dos Santos. “Cro Cop” once ruled Pride’s heavyweight division, where he established himself as one of the greatest MMA athletes in the world. His ability to finish fights with one punch or one kick makes him almost unbeatable on the feet, where 19 of his 25 career wins have come by knockout. Throughout his career he has taken on some of the best fighters in the sport, and he recently signed a three-fight deal with the UFC to make one last heavyweight title run. To do that, however, he will have to get past dos Santos – something that will be no small feat.

“Cigano” enters this match following devastating first round TKO’s of Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve in his first two UFC contests. He is considered a younger version of his UFC 103 foe because of his ability to stand and strike. This fight could end quickly, with the winner getting in line for the next heavyweight title shot.

The number one contender spot in the welterweight division was supposed to be decided at UFC 103 with Mike “Quick” Swick taking on Dutch striker Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann – that was until Swick suffered a concussion resulting from a fall during training. Stepping up on short notice to fill in for Swick will be Paul “Semtex” Daley, an English striker who will also be making his UFC debut. “Semtex” enters this bout with a 21-8 career record, and 16 of his wins have come by knockout.

Following a loss at middleweight to Nate Marquardt at UFC 88, Martin Kampmann opted for a drop in weight to challenge for the welterweight title. His recent hard fought split decision win against veteran fighter Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night 18 shows that he may have made the right decision. With the winner possibly getting the next shot at pound-for-pound king Georges “Rush” St. Pierre, expect both fighters to come out guns-blazing. In another pivotal welterweight match, ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ alum Josh “Kos” Koscheck will lock horns with veteran MMA star Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg. Koscheck is an elite wrestler that has gone 10-4 inside the Octagon. He is coming off of a devastating first round knockout loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 95, and is badly in need of a win to remain part of the division’s elite. In Trigg, he gets a fellow experienced wrestler with a well-rounded game.

Frank Trigg has fought around the world for many different organizations. He owns a 19-6 career record while competing against some of the best welterweights in the world. “Twinkle Toes” recently signed a four fight deal with the UFC to make one final run at the title that he has long desired.

Lauzon Pulled From UFC 103, Looking For Replacement

Because of injury, Dan Lauzon will be unable to participate in UFC 103, according to MMAWEEKLY sources; he apparently suffered a back injury in training recently and will not be ready in time for the September 19 event.

He will undergo an MRI relatively soon to determine the full extent of the injury.  As of this post, there is no replacement for Lauzon.  Both Lauzon and his “former” opponent Rafaello Oliveira are acquisitions from Affliction by the UFC.

Matyushenko Added To UFC 103 Card

Former UFC contender Vladimir Matyushenko returns to the organization as he has been added to the 13-fight card; he will face Croatian light heavyweight Igor Pokrajac at the vent, which will take place on September 19 from American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX.

Matyushenko fought for the UFC five times between 2001 and 2003; he  has compiled a 9-1 record since leaving the organization.  Meanwhile, Pokrajac, making his UFC debut, is currently on an eight-fight win streak, earning stoppage wins in 18 of his 21 victories.  With the Matyushenko-Pokrajac addition, UFC 103 now looks like this:

MAIN CARD

  • Vitor Belfort vs. Rich Franklin
  • Junior Dos Santos vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic
  • Martin Kampmann vs. Mike Swick
  • Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg
  • Hermes Franca vs. Tyson Griffin

Griffin-Franca Bout Demoted To Preliminary Status For UFC 103

Although Tyson Griffin has won five of his last 6 bouts along with 5 Fight of the Night awards during his eight-bout UFC career plus the addition of the Rich Franklin-Vitor Belfort fight and Mirko Filipovic to the lineup, Griffin as a result will fight on the undercard of UFC 103, scheduled to take place on September 19 from American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX.

The transformation of the card – change of plans, if you will – was rather interesting.  Last month, the UFC had officially announced four fights, with the Griffin-Franca bout to be the main event; however, even after announcing a now-scrapped bout between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson main event, the Griffin-Franca bout was not added to the official fight card of UFC.com.

But late last week, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Franklin would take on Vitor Belfort (a new acquisition of the UFC); in addition, a bout including Filipovic and Junior dos Santos was added.  This, in effect, bumped the Griffin-Franca bout to preliminary status.

With these last minute developments, here is the current fight card for UFC 103^:

MAIN CARD

  • Vitor Belfort vs. Rich Franklin
  • Junior Dos Santos vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

Trigg vs. Koscheck At UFC 103

Once agreements have been distributed and finalized, expect another bout at UFC 103 to be added between welterweights Josh Koscheck and Frank Trigg; the initial reports had the event taking place on posibly September 26 in the U.K., but it now appears that UFC 103 will take place on September 19 in Dallas.

Shogun to Be Machida’s First Title Defense Opponent?

Take it for what it’s worth, but it is appearing very unlikely that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will not take on Lyoto Machida as various sources state that it may very well be Mauricio “Shogun” Rua who will be Machida’s first opponent in defense of his Light Heavyweight title at UFC 103 in October 2009.

According to Jackson’s Twitter account, he appears to be leaning towards coaching on The Ultimate Fighter again.  Should this be the case, that would seem to indicate that Rampage may opt to fight Rashad Evans instead, especially in light of their war of words that took place following Jackson’s win over Keith Jardine at UFC 96.

Meanwhile, Rua has been meeting with UFC brass in getting a contract extension hammered out; he is coming off a victory over Chuck Liddell and is gradually getting into the form that made him the #1 contender to the LH title at one time.  Rua may have his difficulties as no one has yet been able to solve Machida’s style.  Machida used to have a style, while effective, tended to lead to boring, uninspiring fights; but that may have changed with his last bout as he knocked out Evans.

While Rua is the obvious opponent for Machida here, I do not see how he can solve the Dragon’s elusive style – hell, no one else has been able to.

Escudero To Take On Miller At UFC 103

At the very least, one bout is in place at UFC 103 as a lightweight bout between Efrain Escudero and Cole Miller will take place at the event; UFC 103 is tentatively scheduled for September 26.  Escudero discussed the specifics over at his website.

Escudero is currently undefeated in his career with an 11-0 record; meanwhile, Miller has picked up his sixth win in 7 fights, most recently defeating Junie Browning at UFC Fight Night 18 earlier this month.
