In the aftermath of the application of a heel hook to Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111, Rousimar Palhares received a 90-day suspension. But a bit of good news came out of all this.
Drwal had X-rays done on his leg and knee, and fortunately, no fractures were found; however, an MRI is scheduled for Monday.
The Drwal camp is of the hope that the only damage incurred in a worst case scenario is a sprained knee; again, that information should be available some time on Monday. Stay tuned to Octagon Buzz for incoming information on the prognosis of Drwal and his MRI.

After UFC 111 took place Saturday night, medical suspensions were handed down by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board – six, to be exact.
Besides the 90-day suspension handed down to Rousimar Palhares for failing to release a hold at the referee’s behest, the following fighters received medical suspensions:
- Frank Mir (30 days). Suspended for precautionary reasons. Makes sense to me after the beatdown received by Shane Carwin; but to be fair, referee Steve Miragliotta let Mir take a bit too much punishment.
- Mark Bocek (30 days). Suspended for laceration on his scalp in his loss to Jim Miller.
- Rory Markham (30 days). Suspended for a facial laceration in his loss to Nate Diaz.
- Tomasz Drwal (indefinitely). Suspension is pending X-rays on his left knee and ankle, incurred by a heel hook by Palhares.
- Jared Hamman (60 days). Suspended for lacerations to his right foot, with competition suspended indefinitely until he receives an X-ray on his foot.
- Matt Riddle (indefinitely). Suspended a minimum of 30 days and a return to training pending a CAT scan.

Apologies, no matter how sincere they may be, will not go unpunished in the MMA game – in this case, the judge, jury and executioner was the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
If you watched the UFC 111 PPV, then you probably caught the preliminaries in which Rousimar Palhares took on Tomasz Drwal. Palhares would win the bout via submission, but would come out the loser as well as the State Board suspended Palhares for 90 days because Palhares injured Drwal’s knee by not letting go of the heel hook he placed on him. Palhares subsequently apologized post-fight to Drwal and his camp.
While 90 days doesn’t seem like much time as that’s the normal down time for a MMA fighter, the suspension certainly cannot help Palhares’ career. It remains to be seen if this affects his career in the UFC; I doubt that it will affect him that much. He isn’t the first fighter suspended by an athletic board nor will he be the last after a victory.
