Shamrock Brothers Signed To Fight In 2009

Anyone who has followed the Shamrock brothers – Ken and Frank – probably already know that neither of the two like each other very much.  Ken thinks that Frank is an ungrateful punk who disrespected their father, Bob.  On the other hand, Frank has accused Ken of guarding his turf excessively and has also accused him of ruthlessly degrading him and calling him a subpar talent (Pot, meet kettle).

It gets even better folks; Frank even went so far as to accuse Ken of being a steroid abuser.  So how do this pair settle their familial differences?  No, not a visit to the set of Dr. Phil; according to Michael Woods over at ESPN.com, the Shamrock brothers have apparently each signed a contract to fight in the cage in a pay-per-view.  As with most contracts in their early stages, it has not been determined as of this writing the venue, the date or which promotion (probably EliteXC since both brothers have done work for them) will promote the bout.

EliteXC’s Lappen Addresses Fight Fix Allegations

I am not going to say that EliteXC is in “damage-control” mode right now, but they definitely are in defense mode as the accusations regarding the Kimbo Slice-Seth Petruzelli bout are running rampant.  But EliteXC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen has prepared a rebuttal to those claims; here is the staement by Lappen in its entirety, courtesy of Fightline.com:

“Press reports that EliteXC suggested or paid money to heavyweight fighter Seth Petruzelli to keep his fight against Kimbo Slice off the ground are false. Let me be perfectly clear with no ambiguity — that did not happen.

“Seth Petruzelli was offered a fee to fight Kimbo Slice, plus a knockout bonus, a common practice throughout the industry. EliteXC organizes and promotes fights. We have not…do not…and will not suggest or dictate fighters’ strategies or tactics. How the fighters perform in the cage is at the sole discretion of the athletes involved.

“The circumstances leading up to the Petruzelli/Slice fight were unusual. Ken Shamrock was declared medically ineligible less than three hours before the fight. As an organization, we made a decision to serve the paying audience in the arena and the prime time audience at home by delivering on a Kimbo Slice fight, which we had promised. This was done simply and solely with a standard fee and bonus offer to Petruzelli and by increasing the purse to Slice. Elite XC is grateful to both Seth and Kimbo for taking this fight against an opponent they didn’t train for and on such short notice.

“In addition, reports that Frank Shamrock volunteered that evening to fight Kimbo Slice are true. Frank is a competitive fighter and he was willing to step up for his organization and the MMA fans. His offer was very greatly appreciated, but everyone in the room knew when he made the offer that it wasn’t a realistic possibility on such short notice.

“Despite all the craziness leading up to and in the aftermath of the event, the evening was a resounding success. The fights were diverse, impressive and entertaining, and I think the Seth/Kimbo fight speaks to the excitement and unpredictability of the sport. Great potential match-ups lie ahead for all the fighters involved that evening.

“And, the television ratings exceeded everyone’s expectations. In fact, the broadcast on CBS was the #1 entertainment and sports program of the night among the adults 18-34 and male 18-34 demographics, topping competing MLB Baseball Divisional games on TBS and college football games on both broadcast and cable. These ratings, and the intense discussion that has followed, speak volumes to the interest and future of this growing sport.”

Shamrock Addresses EliteXC Situation

If there’s two things that you can take to the bank about Ken Shamrock, it would be that he is a MMA legend and that he is outspoken (probably a family trait).  At Shamrock’s website (KenShamrock.com), he issued an open letter of sorts on Thursday, addressing what went down prior to his scheduled bout with Kimbo Slice at EliteXC: Heat.  Here’s the letter in its entirety:

On October 4th, I was set to fight Kimbo Slice on the EliteXC/CBS Saturday Night Fights in a highly anticipated event. Unfortunately, because of a training accident and the intervention of the Florida State Boxing Commission, our fight did not happen. I suffered a cut above my left eye that required six stitches, and the cut was significant enough to cause the Florida State Boxing Commission to refuse to allow me to fight.

The scheduled bout with Kimbo on the EliteXC/CBS Saturday Night Fight card was a great opportunity, and it is unfortunate that I was unable to face Kimbo as planned. I want to apologize to all of my fans, and to the EliteXC and CBS executives who worked so hard to put this fight together. I also want to apologize to Kimbo, Bas Rutten and their entire camp for what happened. I recognize that I put them in a very bad situation, particularly Kimbo. It’s difficult to walk into the ring after training for one opponent only to find out hours before the fight that you have to face some you don’t know or have never seen fight.

Over the years there have been many great times as well as disappointing times and I know Saturday the fans were as disappointed as I was. I was worked up so I decided to train with my partners in order to stay focused on the fight. I was just doing a light roll to check holds when I got caught by a head butt. It was a freak accident and I didn’t think anything of it until I saw drops of blood. It appeared to be a deep laceration so I had my physician look at it and we immediately went to the emergency room. When they said the cut would require stitches, my heart sank because I knew that the Florida Boxing Commission would not let me fight. I was disappointed because I knew this was an opportunity to give the fans, my friends, and my family something to cheer about. It has been a hard couple of years for me, and for my fans. I have suffered some disappointing losses. I definitely regret my decision to train on the day of the fight.

I promise that I will make this up to all my fans. I know that there is nothing I can do about what occurred, but I plan to get back into the ring soon. I would like it to be against Kimbo Slice. Hopefully EliteXC/CBS will still be able to put a fight together. It’s is the right thing to do. The fans want it and I want it.

I would also like to congratulate Petruzelli on his win. He did a phenomenal job. Seth not accepted the challenge of facing a new opponent; he also had to move up in weight class. He came in, dominated Kimbo and walked away with a great victory.

To the fans, I appreciate all of your support.

Thank you and God Bless.

Ken Shamrock

Shamrock Out vs. Slice At EliteXC Event

From all accounts, it appears that Ken Shamrock will not appear in the main event at the EliteXC: Heat card set for Saturday, according to MMARated; several sources close to the event have confirmed this.  Apparently, Shamrock sustained a cut above his eye within the past 24 hours while training and will not participate in tonight’s event as he was scheduled to fight Kimbo Slice.

As you can well imagine, EliteXC officials are seeking a replacement for Shamrock; word as of this writing is that perhaps Seth Petruzelli – originally scheduled to face Aaron Rosa – would be Shamrock’s replacement against Slice.
