Jason MacDonald (left), Nate Quarry (right)

One more bout has been added to UFC 97, which is scheduled for April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, according to MMA Weekly; the bout in question pits Jason MacDonald against Nate Quarry in a battle of middleweights.

MacDonald’s last bout took place during the finale for The Ultimate Fighter 8 in which he lost to Wilson Gouveia; meanwhile, Quarry last fought at UFC 91 in November 2008; Quarry lost to Demian Maia in a submission loss.  In addition to this signed bout, the card looks like this:

  • Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites
  • Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio Rua
  • David Loiseau vs. Ed Herman
  • Brian Stann vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
  • Luiz Cane vs. Steve Cantwell

Liddell And Rua To Main-Event UFC 97

Chuck Liddell (left), Mauricio Rua (right)

The UFC obviously wants to ride the proverbial Chuck Liddell gravy train as UFC president Dana White announced Saturday that Liddell will be part of the main event bout as he will take on Mauricio Rua at UFC 97, which is scheduled to take place on April 18 at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Liddell no doubt earned the main event status for this bout because of his reputation, if anything else.  He has defeated big-time MMA veterans such as Randy Couture (twice), Tito Ortiz (twice), Wanderlei Silva and Alistair Overeem.  Also consider that he is 40 years old and in the twilight of his career at this point.

Meanwhile, Rua is a shell of his former self as conditioning is not his strong suit; a good example was his performance against Mark Coleman at UFC 93 on Saturday when he barely him.  So in essence, this is a tailor-made opponent for Liddell.

Also on the card are Anderson Silva when he takes on Thales Leites and David Loiseau going up against Ed Herman.  When the fight card begins to fold up, Octagon Buzz will have the info for you, along with the most up-to-date MMA news.
