Silva To Retire In 2009…Seriously

I think we all have heard by now that UFC fighter Anderson Silva has hinted at retirement from the MMA game within the next year or so; well today folks, Sherdog is reporting that after an interview with Silva, he plans to call it a career after his remaining contract (6 fights left on the contract), with Silva adding,

“It’s true. I will retire. As soon as this contract is over, I will not fight anymore. I have six more fights on my contract.”

What Silva intends to do is help usher in the next wave of MMA fighters as for some reason he feels his time is up.  There’s a lot of fighters that if that same statement was made, it would be minor news; but Silva is still relatively young, and with the number of fighters fighting in their 40’s (Randy Couture, Mark Coleman come to mind), it is almost unfathomable that Silva would announce his retirement so soon.

Silva even threw a tentative retirement date of sorts when asked, stating around June 2009.  Selfishly, I hope that he reconsiders what he said as the MMA world would not be nearly the same without his presence in the octagon as he is, in my opinion, the best pound-per-pound fighter in MMA today (sorry B.J. Penn fans).  and I know that a lot of you share the same sentiment as I do.  I think that what could perhaps persuade the Spider to “un-retire” is a mass e-mail campaign.  If you’re in it like I am, here is where you need to go – just click here.
