Silva To Main Event UFC Event On Spike TV

Anderson Silva

In what has to be one of the worst-kept secrets in the short history of mixed martial arts, according to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports, UFC President Dana White has confirmed that the organization will run a live Spike TV special on July 19 – in direct competition with Affliction’s pay-per-view debut; but it gets better – the headliner in the main event will be Anderson Silva, who will temporarily move up to light heavyweight in order to take on James Irvin.  The UFC show will take place at The Palms in Las Vegas, NV.

Silva (21-4), arguably the best pound-for-fighter in the world, will not have to vacate his middleweight title; what this fight is intended to do is to test him at this weight class (light heavyweight), but still be able to defend his middleweight title later in the year.  Irvin (14-4) is by and large a stand-up fighter; he is coming off a big 8-second knockout win over Houston Alexander on April 2 in Broomfield, CO – one of the quickest in UFC history.
