Silva Declines UFC 88 Invite, Event In Jeopardy?

Wanderlei Silva

As I had reported earlier today, the UFC was looking to pit Wanderlei Silva against Brandon Vera in a light-heavyweight fight at UFC 88, tentatively scheduled for July 19 and to be broadcast on Spike; however, according to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports, Silva’s people have turned down the invitation, stating that Silva cannot be in shape in one month’s time.  So based on that alone, it appears that Silva-Vera is off – unless UFC President Dana White can somehow can persuade him to reconsider his decision.

Despite that bit of news, it doesn’t mean that the event will not take place; the UFC will simply have to find other fighters to fill that void.  Assuming that the UFC 88 does indeed take place, it cannot bode well for Affliction, who coincidentally or not, have an event scheduled for July 19, as well.  The hurdle – and it is a major one – that Affliction faces is: the number of buys they can obtain between now and the night of the event.  Comparing UFC and Affliction in that aspect alone is like comparing ground beef to sirloin steak; if they want to come out of this in one piece, they better come to the realization that the Affliction event probably will not turn a profit.  That isn’t necessarily a knock on the promotion because truth be told, they have a decent card in place.  It’s just a matter of an upstart promotion (Affliction) having to swim upstream to catch a established organization (UFC).  I can only wish Affliction the best of luck in their endeavor.
