Penn Moving Up To Welterweight

Lightweight B.J. Penn wants it all – or so it seems.  Apparently not satisfied with just staying in the lightweight division, Penn, according to Jeff Cain of MMA Weekly, wants to move up a weight class to the welterweights (170 lbs.) – regardless of the outcome of the Georges St. PierreJon Fitch bout at UFC 87 on Saturday.  Penn confirmed that he would expect to fight the winner of that bout in December; however, UFC president Dana White says not so fast, with White adding,

“I don’t think he’ll get the winner of Fitch and GSP.  He wants to fight GSP if GSP wins the title.  GSP has a win over him.  He wants to try to beat GSP.  I don’t think he’d move up if Fitch won.”

Of course Penn had something to say about the possibility of the bout happening, stating,

“Jon Fitch is a great opponent, a tough opponent, but St. Pierre brings the whole backing of Canada with him to a fight.  Fan base, this sport, it’s entertainment. It would be great to put on a big fight with me and St-Pierre, but then again, it’s about me fighting the best fighter and if Fitch goes down and proves he’s the best fighter, then he’s the man.”

Penn wants to bounce back and forth between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, fully expecting his next bout to be a welterweight bout, preferably between either St. Pierre or Fitch – although he is keeping close watch on the Kenny FlorianRoger Huerta fight, as well.
