Ortiz, Sobral To Fight On Next Affliction Card?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say it is etched in stone yet, but according to Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports, sources are indicating that Tito Ortiz and Renato Sobral will fight in the co-main event at Affliction‘s next event on October 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV, with the main event pitting Fedor Emelianenko against Andrei Arlovski.  Affliction vice president Tom Atencio would not confirm the Ortiz-Sobral fight, stating that details for the card would be held on August 6 during a news conference.

Naturally, there are some stumbling blocks; Atencio was of the understanding that Ortiz couldn’t have dealings with Affliction because of a 60-day “no-compete” clause in Ortiz’ contract with the UFC.  Assuming his contract with the UFC ended with his last fight with them (May 24), that means his ties with the UFC ended effective last weekend.  Atencio also mentioned that a stumbling block in a relationship between Affliction and Ortiz is – surprise!!! – money.

Affliction is the only other MMA promotion besides Ortiz’ former employer (UFC) that has the financial resources to sign Ortiz to a deal.  Meanwhile, Sobral was released by the UFC back in August of 2007 after a controversial win over David Heath; specifically, Sobral would not release a choke even after his fight with Heath was over and referee Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight.  But Sobral won his Affliction debut on July 19 with a win over Mike Whitehead.
