Ontario To Regulate MMA, UFC Reserves Toronto Venue

Finally, the higher-ups in the Great White North – Ontario, Canada, specifically – may be finally realizing what a financial boon mixed martial arts is to the province, as a whole.

That feeling is summed up by the fact that according to a statement issued on Saturday by Ontario government officials, they are “taking steps to allow professional mixed martial arts (MMA) events in the province.

As it were, the province of Ontario is already regulating boxing and kickboxing, so allowing mixed martial arts is a natural progression of what the Ontario Athletioc Commission is already doing. Incidentally, the government proposal calls for the OAC to adopt the full Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.

And rest assured, the UFC has been following this development very closely and are acting accordingly as they have, according to Toronto’s 680News CFTR-AM, resrved the Rogers Centre for an event  in the month of March of 2011.

With Ontario seemingly accepting of MMA, the next logical target for the UFC is the state of New York. Perhaps a meeting with Marc Ratner and Governor David PAterson should be put together. As cash-poor as the state of New York is, I think that Paterson would be receptive to the regulation of MMA.
