Octagon Buzz MMA News And Notes

This week’s Edition of Octagon Buzz News and Notes has a Canadian flavor to it; thanks to our roadies at Sherdog for the info.  Let’s plow ahead, shall we?  We’ll start with some King of the Cage news:

  • Canadian promotion King of the Cage Canada announced last week that Victor Valimaki will take on Noah Imhofer on September 18 at an event that will take place at the Northlands Agricom in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; this bout will be the last under Valimaki’s contract with KOTC Canada, although Valimaki has stated that although he would like to continue to fight for KOTC Canada, he said that he has received other offers and is currently weighing his options.
  • Relatively new MMA promotion X-Fights will have an event that will take place on October 4 at the Moncton Coliseum in Moncton, New Brunswick.  The following is the tentative fight card for the X-Fights event: Ryan Jimmo vs. Jason Cecil, Dan Fowler vs. Scott Fraser, Eric Boudreau vs. Chris Currie, Jeremiah Bernard vs. Richard Arsenault, Jonny Roscoe vs. Iraj Hadin, Brian Mazerolle vs. Shawn Marchand, Chris Johnson vs. Justin Primmer, Jeff Lundberg vs. Ilya Woronowski, Dave Simms vs. Chris Doucet and Dana Dickeson vs. TBA
  • Two new opponents have been assigned to Mark Hominick and T.J. Grant for TKO 35; specifically, Hominick was originally set to fight Tommy Lee, but Lee sustained a broken hand during training so J.C. Pennington will face Hominick instead.  Grant was originally supposed to take on Brian Gassaway, but after Gassaway withdrew due to personal reasons, Grant was offered a bout with UFC veteran Forrest Petz – a fight that Grant immediately accepted.  TKO president Stephane Patry said that the winner of the Grant-Petz bout would receive a shot at Jesse Bongfeldt’s welterweight belt at TKO 36, set to take place in December.
  • Speaking of TKO, they also announced that they have signed a deal with the TQS television network and began airing “TKO – Friday Night Knockouts” on September 5 and every Friday thereafter at 9 PM (ET); according to Patry,
“Our first show was Friday night and the response was just amazing.  The sport was already very popular here in Quebec but this weekend I went out with my girlfriend and we couldn’t even walk in the streets with Steve Bosse, who was part of the show with Derek Gauthier and Martin Grandmont.  Everybody was talking to them about the show.”
  • Edmonton-based MFC has signed several fighters to their roster, including lightweight Ariel Sexton to a multi-fight contract; the MFC is looking to also expand their stable of featherweights very soon and hope to have its first important 145-pound fight by MFC 19, which is set to take place on November 28.  The promtion also hopes to have a 145-pound champiom in place by no later than the middle of 2009.
