Nogueira Suspended For Failed Drug Test

The sport of mixed martial arts suffered a black eye when according to, the California State Athletic Commission has suspended featherweight Alexandre Nogueira for one year and fined him $2,500 for failing a drug test at a June 1 WEC event; according to an email that was sent by CSAC Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas to, Nogueira tested positive for Boldenone.  Boldenone is an anabolic steroid typically used for veterinary use, although a growing number of MMA fighters and other athletes have tested positive for the drug in the past.

Nogueira is suspended until May 31, 2009, although he will have the opportunity to appeal the decision; according to Douglas, Nogueira’s “A” sample was tested at Quest Diagnostics while his “B” sample was tested at Laboratoire de controle du dopage, a WADA facility located in Laval, Quebec, Canada.  Nogueira (13-5-2), a former Shooto lightweight champion, has lost 3 of his past 4 fights.
