MMA In New York To Get A Lifeline?

In what has to be good news for proponents of the sanctioning of mixed martial arts in the state of New York, Franklin McNeil of the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that New York State Governor David Patterson is going to replace Ron Scott Stevens, current chairperson of the New York State Athletic Commission with current commissioner Melvina Lathan.  Stevens’ tenure will end on January 1, 2009.

While he did a good job in his capacity, Lathan was the hands-down choice to replace him; Lathan became the first female African-American commissioner in the state of New York in May 2007.  Lathan’s strong suit is that she makes tough decisions, has a wealth of sports knowledge and has always addressed safety issues; of course, it doesn’t hurt that she’s a big supporter of MMA.  Another thing of note is part of the reason for Stevens’ ouster is the lack of support from the state’s key administrators.
