Machida Wants Contenders Bout With Evans

Although the indicators lean towards a Rashad EvansForrest Griffin bout, Lyoto Machida begs to differ, as according to Tatame.com, Machida is asking for a contenders match between him and Evans to determine who faces Griffin.  Machida’s take?

“I’m waiting for any situation, or face him, if he gets better, or having another opponent. I would like to face Rashad Evans, and the winner gets a title shot, but now it seems like they will put him against Forrest Griffin … I’d like to face him and the winner gets Griffin, it’s a good way. I don’t know how it’s gonna be, I’m ready to fight, but don’t wanna fight anyone, because I’m building my way in UFC and I wanna fight the top fighters so that they could give me a title shot after…. I never chose opponents, I leave it to UFC and my managers, what they want for me is good. If they think fight Shogun is better I’ll do it, I’m prepared to for everything.”

While that is admirable wanting only the best competition, it is not as simple as it seems.  Firstly, Thiago Silva pulled out of a bout that was tentatively scheduled for October, which makes things a bit tricky right now for Machida – almost like a man without an opponent, so to speak.  While a contenders bout would make perfect sense, the way that the UFC operates tends to lean towards a Evans-Griffin fight down the road.  That doesn’t make it right per se, but that’s the inner politics of MMA at work, as a general rule.
