M-1 Global, HDNet Sign Deal

HDNet added another promotion to their portfolio as they have signed a deal with M-1 Global on Wednesday to air the 2008 season of the promotion’s M-1 Challenge, according to MMA Weekly; what the M-1 Challenge is is a series of events that feature teams of fighters – comprised of one fighter in each of 5 weight classes, competing in a team vs. team format, not unlike the now-defunct IFL.

The current deal between M-1 Global and HDNet will air the 2008 events on a tape-delay basis (10 events, to be exact); each of the events will be split up into 2 episodes for HDNet with all 5 bouts from 2 teams facing off on one episode, then the other two teams’ 5 bouts airing in a separate episode, giving HDNet 20 episodes from the 2008 season.

In addition, the current contract covers only the M-1 Challenge; the promotion has also procured television deals to air the M-1 Challenge in various African countries, Korea, Brazil, the Phillipines, India and several other countries.  M-1 Global head Vadim Finkelstein is also working on a reality series which is centered around the #1 heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko entitled, “Fighting Fedor”, in which several fighters train and compete with the eventual winner going up against Emelianenko in a future bout.  HDNet declined comment on the M-1 Challenge series and the “Fighting Fedor” reality series.
