Larosa Nabs Deal With AFL

Tara Larosa

In what may be a landmark deal which could affect future pay structures for other mixed martial artists, Tara Larosa has come to terms on a contract with American Fight League, a Kentucky-based organization; the deal will earn Larosa a minimum of $500,000 and as much as $750,000 over 18 months.  The deal between Larosa and AFL was brokered by North County Fight Club Fight Management, which represents some of the top MMA superstars such as Brandon Vera, Roger Huerta and Diego Sanchez.  Larosa had previously negotiated with EliteXC, International Fight League and Affliction before opting to sign with AFL; she has also made somewhat of a difference in the AFL already, as she has already lobbied the company to add several women’s weight divisions.  Larosa was also pleased by AFL’s willingness to bring in top talent from Japan, Europe and other global hotbeds.

Larosa (15-1) has posted 12 straight victories – including wins over Shayna Baszler, Amanda Buckner and Julie Kedzie – and has not made it a secret that she wants to face undefeated EliteXC standout Gina Carano.  Larosa’s manager, Jeff Clark – despite the magnitude of the deal between Larosa and AFL – plans to remain proactive in order to limit the negative backlash she may encounter.  Clark believes that Larosa’s talent speaks for itself, adding, “Tara’s the Tiger Woods of female fighting.  She’s the real deal, but we’re worried girls like Gina Carano won’t step up to fight her.”

Larosa’s deal will also bring far-reaching consequences in an industry that is still fairly new as other fighters may use that deal as leverage in their future contract negotiations.  Larosa is expected to make her promotional debut at a pay-per-view event later this fall in either October or November.  As it is, most fighters don’t make a ton of money in the mixed martial arts game; perhaps the Larosa deal is the linchpin that will open the eyes of other fight organizations and get them to open the purse strings a little more.
