Kongo Next For Lesnar?

Brock Lesnar, fresh off an impressive win over Heath Herring, was the subject of speculation at the UFC 87 post-fight press conference, according to Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports; Dana White – believe it or not – was almost rendered speechless when asked about Lesnar’s performance at UFC 87 in his bout against Herring.  White on Thursday said that he didn’t agree with Lesnar’s take that he should fight the best fighters of the UFC immediately.  After UFC 87?  White has changed his tune, adding,

“I’m telling you I’m blown away by his performance tonight.  One of our guys said it looks like he’s hitting him with lunch boxes. The guy is a phenomenon. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think he could come in here with no fights and compete at this level, he proved me wrong.”

White also has converts from within the fighter ranks, it appears as White said,

“After that first fight against Mir, I had all the guys come up to me… Hughes, Liddell, Rampage and said this guy is going to be scary in a couple of years. He’s a monster. I don’t know what guys are going to want to fight him.”

The Lesnar love-fest aside, during the post-fight press conference, the buzz around the room was that perhaps Lesnar’s next opponent might be Cheick Kongo.  In a lot of ways, Kongo could be a tailor-made opponent for Lesnar; First and foremost, Kongo is talented yet at the same time is inconsistent.  Kongo’s forte is the stand-up game which may be his best chance of possibly beating Lesnar; put Kongo on the ground and he can forget about it – Lesnar would mop the mat with Kongo. Ask Frank Mir, he’ll tell you.  But to be fair, the UFC heavyweight division is kinda thin, so the Lesnar-Kongo rumor could have some teeth to it.  Certainly the next month or so will give us a better idea of if and when it happens.
