Irvin: Silva Should Drop Weight

By and large, MMA fighters do not shy away from a challenge; however, it is difficult to gauge what light heavyweight James Irvin‘s thinking was as according to Jason Perkins of fightline.com, Irvin thinks that Anderson Silva may have bitten off more than he can chew as he goes up a weight class – after basically cleaning out the middleweight division.  Irvin added, “I see what Silva is doing.  There’s no one left for him to beat up at 185, but I think he’d better off going down a weight class.  He’s not going to be as strong as he was at 185 lbs.  He won’t be able to bully anybody around.”

On the other hand, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, thinks that Silva can handle himself well at the light heavyweight level, telling fightline.com, “He’s a big guy, man.  He’s almost my size. He’s like 210 now and he’s all muscle so he won’t have a problem at 205.  He’s very strong; he works a lot with the weights.  He’s much stronger now than the first time I met him.  We started training together in 2002.  He was like a real 185 then, but now he can be 205 easy.  He can fight both 185 and 205.  He can switch easy, no problem.”

Let’s see what Silva does against Irvin at light heavyweight before any conclusions can be drawn about his future at that division; with Silva’s skill set, I expect him to easily handle Irvin when they meet in the octagon.  Dana White will have a pleasant dilemma on his hands, assuming Silva has some success at light heavyweight.
