Huerta, UFC Far Apart On Contract Talks

Roger Huerta has his plate full as he faces Ken Florian at UFC 87 in Minneapolis, MN on October 9; he also has to deal with the fact that his current contract is about to expire.  He is currently in talks with the UFC about a possible contract extension, but according to MMA Mania, if Huerta doesn’t get that extension relatively soon, his chances for being in line for a title shot will evaporate – assuming Huerta defeats Florian at UFC 87.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer made a good observation on Huerta’s situation, and he said,

“Huerta, who has one fight left on his contact after the Florian fight, is far apart with UFC on terms for a renewal. Huerta, who has gotten a new agent, was asking for six-figures guaranteed per fight as well as points on the PPV, in negotiations that haven’t gone well for some time. That’s a better deal then [BJ] Penn, so he wasn’t going to get it. The UFC position is that they groomed Huerta and pushed him hard and were careful of his opponents, with the exception of Clay Guida….”

What needs to be understood here is the way UFC grooms its fighters; Dana White, first and foremost – despite being rough around the edges – is a businessman.  As such, he won’t allow a fighter to challenge for a belt until said fighter signs an extension.  That’s standard UFC policy as to ensure that champions defend their titles and don’t leave for another promotion or tie up the weight division with contract negotiations.  So basically, Huerta can’t challenge for a title with just one fight remaining.  Again, Huerta needs to get this contract situation resolved, because it could go from bad to worse should he defeat Florian; but then again, should Florian beat Huerta – which I fully expect to happen – none of the contract stuff will matter very much.
