You know, it is on an almost daily basis that fighters within MMA have a dream opponent. Which is OK, assuming that the fight makes sense and would make for good ratings and put plenty of butts in the seats.
One fight that I do not think would qualify under that criteria is a bout that Strikeforce’s Dan Henderson wants to do: a fight with Fedor Emelianenko. This is not a typo, folks, Henderson wants to take on Fedor.
He recently had an interview with Sherdog and what he had to say was interesting, to say the least:
“To me, he’s not the reason I signed with Strikeforce just to fight him… although that is interesting and appealing to me to be able to challenge myself against him. I don’t know who else wants to fight him, but I do know the fans like to see him fight. He’s very effective and likes to finish guys and does a very good job. I think him and I would make an interesting matchup.”
This is a fight that I hope never happens; I would suspect that Scott Coker, the head of Strikeforce, would never put this fight together. Fedor, for one, has a fight strategy that is night-and-day different than Henderson. Let’s face it: no one has been able to figure him out, and Henderson is no different in that regard. Strikeforce doesn’t need to stoop to that level. Henderson should fight other heavyweights. Fighters such as Antonio Silva, Mike Kyle and Fabricio Werdum. Win all of those fights then maybe you can revisit the subject of taking on Fedor.
It just isn’t the right time for Hendo to fight Fedor. Unless he wants to prematurely end his career.
