Griffin-Liddell? Why Not?

   Forrest GriffinChuck Liddell

Well, the smoke has cleared and we have a new champion in the UFC‘s light heavyweight division – one Forrest Griffin.  And deservedly so, I might add.  The question that comes up the most is: who’s next for Griffin?  There’s some possibilities out there, in light of the fact that the light heavyweight division in the UFC is deep.  Some of the possibilities:

  • Anderson Silva.  On paper, it sounds good.  But there’s a glitch: Silva’s in another weight division and his move up to light heavyweight is temporary – he’ll be back to his natural weight.  So for now, that’s out of the question.
  • Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.  Rampage and Griffin – assuming the stars align correctly – will probably at some time get a rematch.  But after Jackson’s loss to Griffin, he will need to get at least one winning fight in before a rematch can be discussed.
  • Lyoto Machida.  This one would be intriguing.  Machida is undefeated, pretty much punking everyone he has went up against.  At his rate, he will eventually be a top contender for the title currently held by Griffin.
  • Chuck Liddell.  This is the matchup I think could and should happen.  For one, it would be box office gold – Liddell, arguably the most popular fighter in the UFC right now versus Griffin, who has a big following of his own.  Liddell’s fight game would provide yet another challenge for Griffin as Liddell’s style is unorthodox – to say the least.  But Liddell has to get past Rashad Evans first, because if Evans beats Liddell, then Evans will have something to say about facing Griffin at some future date.  I think the fans would want a Liddell-Griffin fight and certainly the matchmakers at UFC would want it.  Those two in the octagon could rival – perhaps surpass – the Jackson-Griffin fight as one of the bigger fights in UFC history.

Who do you think that Griffin should fight next?  Leave a comment and let Octagon Buzz know who you think Griffin should defend his UFC light heavyweight title against.

Jackson…no doubt that decision was bull and every fight fan knows it…rematch right away, Quinton shouldn’t have to fight anyone but Griffin!
