Fedor Hopes To Return Soon

If WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko has his way, he will not be sidelined for too much longer; according to Josh Gross of SI.com, Emelianenko plans to be in fighting shape by December 31.  Emelianenko has said that the pain and swelling which followed his quick win over Tim Sylvia at Affliction’s second show on July 19 has subsided, but it will probably be several more weeks before he hits the gym again.

In the meantime, he is in Southern California in meetings with Affliction before he does a segment for the FSN series Sports Science; on the show, it will examine Emelianenko’s application of chokes.  Because he is unable to punch, the punching segment was scrapped.  Affliction had originally planned a bout between Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski, but the promotion opted for a bout between Arlovski and Josh Barnett instead; Emelianenko would prefer to face the winner of that bout, but also said he would be open to facing the loser, as well.  Emelianenko added,

“My desire at this point is to meet with the winner of the fight.  But I still have a desire to fight with whomever loses as well.  The meaning of the belt really depends on how it’s developed and how it evolves.  The relevance and the status of the belt is good, but it’s not as important as the people fighting for the belt. The caliber of the fighters is what makes the sport, not the belts.”

Emelianenko’s plan for facing the winner of Arlovski-Barnett will have to be put on hold as he plans to fight in Japan on New Year’s Eve – something he does on an annual basis; early rumor has it that he may possibly have a rematch with Mirko Filipovic; however, a rep for Filipovic says that isn’t likely to happen right now.  No matter who he faces in December, it should provide a test for his often-injured hand.
