European MMA News And Notes

There’s lots of MMA news from overseas – Europe, to be exact – to report here at Octagon Buzz, so let’s get started; many thanks to Tim Leidecker of Sherdog for the info:

  • Dream To Be Televised On Eurosport

According to Fighting Entertainment Group, the parent company of the Dream promotion, Eurosport – Europe’s largest satellite and cable network, plan to televise events in the future.  The agreement will include Dream’s semi-finals and the final for both the lightweight and middleweight tournaments.  The agreement will be an addition to the K-1 programming already in place on Eurosport.

  • EliteXC Wins Khalidov Bidding War

EliteXC managed to emerge victorious in a bidding war for the services of Mamed Khalidov, a light heavyweight from out of Chechen; EliteXC beat out rival MMA promotions UFC, Dream and M-1 Global in bidding for Khalidov.  The length of the contract is for 2 years, according to Martin Lewandowski, Khalidov’s manager and promoter of the KSW promotion, which is based in Poland.  Khalidov’s first bout is alleged to take place in the latter part of 2008, possibly on the ShoXC “Elite Challenger Series” on August 15.

  • M-1 UK-Bound

On September 27, the M-1 Challenge will visit Nottingham, England; the event was originally intended for the United States, but M-1 execs changed their plans when insurance broker Tony McDonagh made a play to bring the event to the U.K. instead.  Four teams – Red Devil Sport Club from St. Petersburg, Russia, Team USA, a Russian Legion team and a yet to be determined team from Europe – will compete at the event.  The promoter of record is Warrior Promotions, who run the highly successful Cage Warriors Fighting Championships promotion.

  • FFC To Return In September

Germany’s largest MMA promotion is scheduled to hold its first event on September 7; it had been scheduled for May 4 but had to be postponed because fighter-turned-promoter Marko Zschorner was seriously injured at a night club in early spring of this year.  Several fighters are scheduled to participate on the card, including Augusto Frota, Ivan Mussardo, Norman Jendritzyk and Gerhard Gorewoda.  The first confirmed bout on the card is between Sebastian Kliesch and Eastern German MMA champion Peter Sobotta.
