EliteXC’s Card Good, The Numbers Not So Good

I don’t think there’s doubt any that the EliteXC: Lawler vs. Smith II card was pretty darn good, even without Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano in the lineup.  But as any network executive will tell you, everything lies in the ratings; all things being equal, the EliteXC telecast took a guillotine choke in the ratings.  CBS‘ telecast on Saturday wasn’t nearly as successful as their inaugural show, taking in only 2.62 million viewers and a 1.0 rating; that pales in comparison to the 4.3 million viewers and 1.9 rating that EliteXC’s first telecast pulled in.

In the grand scheme of things, it is hard to say what this means for EliteXC; although to be fair, Slice and Carano weren’t part of the card.  But both are expected to be on their next telecast which is set for October 4; should the broadcast in October tank – even with Slice and Carano on the card – it would without a doubt determine what direction EliteXC will take in the future.  So October 4 will be a very important date in the lives of EliteXC – literally.  And I fully expect UFC to do counter-programming on that date, so the task at hand for EliteXC will be daunting.
