Coy Crowned Champ At Sportfight 23

The main event at Sportfight 23, which took place at the Rose Garden in Portland, OR, did not disappoint as Brad McCray of Sherdog.com reported, two fighters – Nathan Coy and Mike Pierce – with similar wrestling backgrounds hooked up for what was a very close fight for both.  Neither fighter had dominance over the other, yet Coy took advantage of his size ands southpaw stance, earning a narrow decision over Pierce; the win gave Coy the Sportfight welterweight title.  The co-main event pitted Ricky Story and Jake Ellenberger in a welterweight bout; Story dominated from the beginning, using his size, take-down ability and top control to muster out a 30-27 over Ellenberger.

The Fight of the Night honors went to the Josh Queen and Josh Bennett bout; technique and blood were thrown out as Queen dominated the fight early, as he retained his Sportfight heavyweight title with a victory over Bennett with a rear-naked choke at 2:16 of the first round.  In what could be considered a mild upset, Mychal Clark beat Brazilian Fabiano Scherner  by verbal submission at 3:51 of the second round; Scherner had the early advantage, taking down Clark, securing a top-side crucifix and opening a cut over Clark’s eye.  But Clark in the second round landed a straight jump-kick to Scherner’s face, fought off an armbar attempt then got Scherner to the mat with a solid punch.  Clark landed several blows to Scherner before the Brazilian fighter submitted, citing an injured knee, hence the verbal submission.

The Submission of the Night happened during the very brief fight between Mike Coble and Eli Peterson after Peterson applied a rear-naked choke to Coble; the fight ended at 52 seconds into the first round.  Beatdown of the Night went to Colt Toombs – son of WWE legend “Rowdy Roddy” Piper – as he pummeled opponent Steve Quick with 30-40 unanswered punches and kicks before the fight was stopped at 1:38 of the opening round.  In other Sportfight 23 action:

  • Ryan Jensen defeated Mitchell Whitesel, TKO (strikes), 4:44 of Round 1
  • D.J. Linderman defeated Justin Moody, TKO (strikes), 2:37 of Round 2
  • Lee Morrison defeated John Heath, unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Adam Stone defeated Ray Virgen (guillotine choke), :44 of Round 1
