Couture Overrated? Not So Fast

Randy Couture

Anyone who follows and is knowledgeable of the MMA scene – and that includes everyone who is a regular reader of Octagon Buzz – knows that Randy Couture has been picking his spots as of late.  While it is true that he has kept himself very busy between running his successful training empire in Las Vegas and looking for that fight that will re-establish him in most peoples’ minds again, one question that comes to mind is this:  Is Couture overrated?  Let’s probe a little deeper into this, shall we?

Randy is 45 years old – which is considered old for most professional sports.  But does that necessarily preclude him from getting future “big” fights in the future?  No, not really.  But unlike Tito Ortiz, who is still relatively young in comparison to Couture, Randy didn’t burn his bridges with the UFC.  Couture was at or near the end of his contract with the UFC, so in essence, he is a MMA free agent – so to speak.  Another issue that seems to dog Couture: the quality of opponent he has gotten lately.  Yes it is true that he fought Tim Sylvia.  But also understand that circumstances beyond Randy’s control made that bout happen.  Now don’t get me wrong – Tim Sylvia is no Kimbo Slice, but on the other hand, he is no Chuck Liddell by any stretch of the imagination.  A mid-carder is what best describes Sylvia; Couture defeated Sylvia (no easy task considering Sylvia’s size and skill set).  That win brought Couture back into peoples’ minds.

Now there’s the rumor of a Couture-Fedor Emelianenko fight; let’s assume that the two square off in the octagon.  Should Couture emerge victorious against Fedor, one would think that a win like that would elevate Randy into a higher ranking in his weight division – as it should.  Should Randy lose to Fedor, then the subject of being overrated could and should be revisited.  But until that happens, Couture will have a hard time putting the “overrated” moniker to rest – which is unfortunate.  Couture is an icon in MMA, and I hope like heck that Dana White and the suits at the UFC come to their senses and sign Couture to a contract.  Just because you’re 45 doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re washed up.
