Contenders 11 Show Cancellation Not ProElite Related

Yesterday, I had reported that ProElite had cancelled 2 shows – an EliteXC event in Albuquerque, NM and a Cage Rage “Contenders 11” event in East London, England; it has been learned from MMAjunkie.com that Cage Rage officials have claimed that the Cage Rage event cancellation was in no way related to the cancellation of the EliteXC card in New Mexico.  Cage Rage promoter Dave O’Donnell added,

“This show has only been canceled so we can concentrate on our November Contenders show.  Our November event will be a big deal as it will be the culmination of a reality TV show and will be broadcast live on Nuts TV. We do not want to spread our resources too thin.”

O’Donnell could not provide specific names as of this writing but said that some of the fighters scheduled for the cancelled event in the UK will be moved to another Cage Rage event while the remaining fighters will be released from their contracts.  The Contenders event series serves as a feeder system for Cage Rage and not unlike Elite’s ShoXC series, also showcases young and new talent.

Cage Rage, which was bought by ProElite has been catching flak in the UK for supposedly a lack of quality competitors and matchmaking on its cards; in addition, employees have been laid off by the promotion, leaving 3 full-timers remaining.  Oddly enough, some of the fighters for the cancelled Contenders event were not aware of the cancellation until informed by MMAjunkie.com.  All around, not a very professional way to run a MMA promotion.
