Alessio Wins At Free For All, Couture Injured

John Alessio

The Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas had a free event that took place on Friday with mixed results – specifically was called “Free for All, A Night of Combat” – that featured Kim “Sugar Free” Couture, the wife of UFC legend Randy Couture.  The event was held in a venue that can hold 18,000 people, yet despite tickets being given away to anyone who came to the box office window, the actual attendance was closer to 9,000 or so at Thomas & Mack.  But that setback was tempered with the amount of action on the card for the evening.

And the hype was all about Couture who went up against Kim Rose – both who were making their MMA debut; Couture, in addition to being soundly beaten by Rose in an unanimous decision, suffered a broken nose and jaw.  She was taken to a local hospital and was released later with instructions to see a specialist on Saturday.  The main event featured John Alessio against Pete Spratt; Allesio had difficulty taking down Spratt.  The match went back and forth until Alessio finally sunk in a choke to which Spratt finally tapped out at 2:07 of the second round; the win boosted Alessio’s record to 23-11 while Spratt dropped to 18-13.

In other action on the card, Dave Jansen managed to eke out a narrow decision over Dennis “The Piranha” Davis; Jansen, with the win, remains undefeated (4-0) while Davis is now 14-9.  Newcomer Kui Gonsalves-Kanoho (1-0) had an easier time as he scored an unanimous decision over fellow newcomer Ricky Johnson (0-1).  In addition, Brice Ritani-Coe had a successful MMA debut as he scored a victory over novice Rob Mitchell at 4:33 of the opening round due to a stoppage.
