Affliction’s PPV Numbers Overinflated?

Affliction: Banned

It’s pretty much common knowledge that Affliction vice president Tom Atencio said that the Affliction: Banned event had over 100,000 pay-per-view buys.  Well it seems that perhaps the numbers that Atencio threw out there may be a bit high, according to Jason Perkins of Fightline.com; to recap, Atencio made the claim that the Affliction card had well over 100,000 buys – which would make the card a success.

However, according to none other than Dave Meltzer– who I would trust with this type of information over Atencio any day of the week – independent studies have shown that the actual buy rate is closer to between 50,000 and 85,000; Meltzer added, “Based on independent estimates we’ve heard, the number has been estimated at between 50,000 and 85,000 buys.  Atencio claimed the number as being higher, saying it topped 100,000, although at press time, any numbers could only be considered rough estimates. Atencio told us that since UFC doesn’t release numbers, he’s not going to either.”

It certainly sounds like the Affliction event, while the arena they filled was successful in that vein, may not have done as well on the buy rate as they claimed.  But as I said before, I trust Meltzer’s information any time over anything Atencio throws out there.  And if in fact the buy rate was in the 50,000-85,000 range as stated, then it is possible that Donald Trump may take stock unto whether he wants to invest futher into Affliction.
