Affliction Not Planning To Counter UFC 100 – Not That It Matters

Usually, Affliction is a MMA company that more often than not will usually provide a card to counter any MMA card that UFC puts together.  Oddly enough, that appears not to be the case this time around as Affliction has chosen not to offer a card to go up against UFC 100 on July 11– although the explanation by Affliction vice president Tom Atencio is rather curious, dare I say odd.

According to Atencio,

“I hope [all three organizations can survive], but you never know,” Atencio said. “The UFC likes to crush. That’s what they do, and that’s what they’ve done. They don’t want competition, and that’s evident by them putting on the free event on Saturday, replaying [UFC 94 on Spike TV in order to counter-program Strikeforce].

“But it is what it is. [“Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz”] was a successful show. You saw the amount of people in there. If we can all three stay in, then great. If not, then I guess the strong will survive.”

He further added:

“That’s all rumors, and that’s just what people think. In my eyes, it’s not even a possibility. It doesn’t make sense.”

Myself, I am not going to read much into it.  It’s pretty much common knowledge that when Affliction goes up against the UFC, UFC beats them both in gate and in total pay-per-views.  So I wouldn’t exactly say that it’s surprising.  As far as Atencio saying that he wants all three brands to survive, I seriously doubt that he believes that himself.  As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be too shocked to see Strikeforce become the #2 MMA organization, surpassing Affliction in due time.
