Affliction Likes UFC’s Attention

One could assume that MMA fans do not like the fact that the UFC has staged an event on the same day as Affliction’s card; but try telling that to Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio; Dan Stupp of is reporting that at a press conference that took place on Wednesday, Atencio talked about both promotions.  According to Atencio, he stated that the UFC views Affliction as a legitimate threat and added, “It’s flattering.  Obviously, it means they’re paying attention to us.  And it obviously means we’re a threat of some sort to them.”  Atencio also noted about the card, “Our card is stacked from top to bottom.  Every one of our fights could be a main event.  It’s just an unbelievable card, and people want to see it.  There’s very, very few people out there that are even criticizing the card.”

While all of that could possibly be true, one thing will be a deciding factor, to a degree – while Spike TV will televise the UFC event for free, the Affliction card, with two of their fights to be televised on FoxSportsNet, the main card will be a pay-per-view, at the price of $39.95.  Another thing – Atencio, despite saying that the UFC perceives Affliction as a “threat”, conveniently forgets that in cases like this, it is simply the cost of doing business.  The WWE was the pioneer of the pay-per-view back in the day and they also show free programming three times a week.  Again, it’s the cost of doing business.

At the same time, I hope Affliction succeeds as competition in MMA is healthy for the industry and gives the promotions the incentive to not only survive, but thrive.  Unless the rating numbers absolutely stink for the UFC, not much will be realized from the 2 promotions showing fights on the same night.  UFC and Affliction will carry on, regardless.  One thing that will be abundantly clear – Donald Trump, despite his very deep pockets, is a results-driven individual; because of that, he will expect positive results from the Affliction card.  So the pressure is on Affliction to do well, because with Trump, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.
